VCAL/VET

Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning

The Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning (VCAL) is a hands-on learning option for students in Years 11 and 12. The VCAL gives students practical work-related experience, as well as literacy and numeracy skills and the opportunity to build personal skills that are important for life and work. Like the Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE), VCAL is an accredited secondary certificate.

The VCAL program designed for the Senior Secondary students in their final two years of schooling. In some cases students may commence units in their last 3 years of schooling. VCAL compliance is overseen by the Victorian Registrations and Qualifications Authority (VRQA). The VRQA provides regulations that ensure quality education and training is delivered by the providers it registers in Victoria.

There are three levels of VCAL – Foundation, Intermediate and Advanced. At JSA VCAL is taught at Foundation level; at this level students may be assisted in achieving the learning outcomes by their teachers. VCAL is made up of four learning strands:

  • Literacy and Numeracy Skills
  • Personal Development Skills
  • Work Related Skills
  • Industry specific Skills.

JSA currently offers four units of work at foundation level. Most units are delivered on-site at and by JSA. The Industry Specific unit is delivered off site by Kangan Batman TAFE.

Vocational Education and Training

Vocational Education and Training (VET) programs are approved by the VCAA (Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority) following consultation with schools, industry and training providers. Programs lead to nationally recognised qualifications.

JSA provides 2 VET courses

  • Certificate II – Sports and Recreation
  • Certificate II – Creative Industries

Each course has 10 enrolments available at JSA. Priority will be given to students enrolled in the full/part VCAL program. Students enrolled in the Pathways Certificate or year 10 may be offered an enrolment if a position is available.

Course credits will contribute towards students’ VCAL certificate.
