Jacana School for Autism implements a learning and teaching approach that builds on individual student’s strengths and skills, which accommodates the particular impairments associated with autism. Learning and teaching programs centre upon interpersonal/personal skills, communication and executive functioning.
Emphasis is placed on social interactions, play skills, imagination and developing students’ ability to manage and self regulate their own behaviour and emotions. Programs are designed to meet individual student’s needs and interests.
The school has developed an autism specific curriculum which incorporates a school based AusVELS and Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning (VCAL).
Teachers are trained in autism specific pedagogy and work in accordance with the autism specific Jacana School for Autism Principles of Learning and Teaching (PoLT) and Learning Protocols.
